About this electrical preventive maintenance checklist

Use it as an electrical panel maintenance checklist or a PM schedule sheet for commercial and residential buildings. Write voltage and current readings in the blanks. Torque checks, infrared scans and insulation resistance tests are marked optional, so delete them if you don't do them. For a quick condition check, use the electrical inspection checklist.

Follow your local code and manufacturer instructions; this is a general checklist.

Questions

What is included in electrical preventive maintenance?

Visual checks of panels and switchboards, signs of heat or moisture, breaker condition, labeling and working space, GFCI and AFCI tests, grounding and bonding, emergency and exit lighting, and disconnects, motors and transformers. Many programs add torque checks and infrared scans.

Is this an NFPA 70B compliance document?

No. It is a general maintenance template. NFPA 70B and your insurer or authority having jurisdiction may require a documented program, specific tests and qualified persons. Use this sheet to record your own checks.

Should panels be opened while energized?

Only by qualified persons using safe work practices and the right PPE. Visual checks with covers on, and work done de-energized and locked out, are safer where possible.
